Osaka claims US Open title after Serena meltdown:The Asahi Shimbun

Williams lost to 20-year-old tennis sensation Naomi Osaka, but she first had a heated dispute with the court's umpire Carlos Ramos.

A third violation, this time for verbal abuse against the chair umpire, cost Williams a game.

When she missed the shot, Williams vehemently slammed her racket to the ground in frustration, which elicited a second violation from Ramos. "Even when I was a little kid, I always dreamt that I would play Serena in a final of a Grand Slam", Osaka said.

Remarkably, Mouratoglou admitted he was coaching Williams from the sidelines, as he made these comments to ESPN. "I don't cheat! I didn't get coaching. I'd rather lose", she told Ramos.

Serena Williams discusses a coaching violation warning given by umpire Carlos Ramos.

Williams came to the net 28 times and won 24 of the points, not giving her opponent a chance to disrupt her rhythm.

It was the second Grand Slam final defeat in a row for Williams, after Wimbledon in July, as she seeks an initial major title since returning to the tour after having a baby in 2017. She unwrapped a new racket and then took the court to argue again some more about coaching.

But the 23-time Grand Slam champion insists if it was a male player in her position, it would never have escalated as it did.

Osaka would win on her next service and take home the title.

Osaka was also in tears, and said: "I know everyone was cheering for her and I'm sorry it had to end like this". Then she was hit with a second violation for smashing a racquet after being broken.

Two years later, during a final loss to Sam Stosur, Williams called umpire Eva Asderaki "a hater" and "unattractive inside" for calling a hindrance penalty against her and was fined.

Osaka was nervous Saturday, making a few phone calls to her sister in Paris to calm her down. Murray had three other Grand Slam mixed doubles titles.

Sep 6, 2018; New York, NY, USA; Naomi Osaka of Japan celebrates match point against Madison Keys of the United States in a women's semi-final match on day eleven of the 2018 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

But even if it's not Saturday, she believes she'll claim Court's record. She had four operations following the birth of her daughter, Olympia.

Williams held, but Osaka was able to do the same in her next service game to win the set and the match.

Osaka, the first Japanese woman ever to make a slam singles final, saved all 13 break points she faced, and, asked how she did it, replied: "This is going to sound really bad but I was just thinking I really want to play Serena".

What was most problematic for Williams on the scoreboard was that she was unable to keep up with a version of herself.
