U.S. ex-senator Jon Kyl named as successor to McCain

When asked why he won't commit to serving past the end of the year, Kyl explained that when he left the Senate six years ago, he had no intention of returning.

Thousands of Arizonans on Wednesday flocked to the state Capitol Building in Phoenix, where the Republican senator laid in state.

It's unclear what more Kyl, 76, will do in the Senate.

McCain, a long-standing opponent of Obamacare, returned from cancer treatments to enter his vote and cited the lack of a clear replacement for the health-care plan as his reasoning.

After the announcement, Cindy McCain - the widow of the late Arizona senator - applauded Kyl's appointment.

Doug Ducey is expected to announce Tuesday.

Joseph Lieberman, a former USA senator and close friend, said on CNN: "I say goodbye and my heart will be heavy". On Monday, Trump initially refused to respond to any questions regarding the senator, instead spending the day talking and tweeting about unrelated topics.

Hoyer served with Kyl in the House and was in Democratic leadership at the same time Kyl was in Senate Republican leadership. Most recently he's been helping President Donald Trump's Supreme Court pick, Brett Kavanaugh, get nominated.
