Koepka joins golf greats with US PGA win

Despite finishing second, the extraordinary hype surrounding the 14-time major victor has meant that the result has somewhat overshadowed the achievement of young talent Brooks Koepka - who won his third major title and maiden PGA Championship.

Arguably the biggest surprise qualifier, Simpson had been without a win since 2013 until cruising to victory in this year's Players Championship, cruising to a dominant four-shot win at Sawgrass in May.

When it was over, Woods had a warm hug and a huge smile for the guy he calls "Brooksy".

"Crowds are incredible", said Italian golfer Francesco Molinari. He hit a lot of good putts that didn't go in, as well. On a weekend when everybody except Rickie Fowler was throwing dart after dart and birdieing every hole in sight, scoring par meant you were virtually moving backwards.

After failing to find a fairway over his first nine holes - going 0-for-7 - Woods changed his shirt following another miss on No. 9, then hit an wonderful shot around a tree from near a cart path to 10 feet to set up a birdie for a front-nine 32.

Adam Scott walked away from the US PGA Championship with plenty of positives, despite wasting an opportunity to clinch his second major title.

Drama? That was Woods' domain.

Without hitting a fairway on the front nine, Woods cut the four-shot deficit to two. And we just worked on some putting and that was it and making sure my head stayed still. That one went in.

On No. 18, Woods offered one final flourish.

But he did not quit.

"I even felt I had a chance to win coming down the last few holes, and I hit that shot into 15".

Koepka holds off Woods to win 100th PGA Championship
Denise watched the round from the gallery alongside Koepka's girlfriend, Jena Sims, as Koepka clinched the title with a par on 18. Brooks Koepka has a two-shot lead at the PGA Championship as he tries to become only the fifth player in history to win the U.S.

Roars echoed through the trees at Bellerive.

It says a lot about how far Ryan Fox has come this year at the pointy end of professional golf that there was a cool detachment, rather than any wild celebration, over his best ever performance at a major. "It was pretty evident what Tiger was doing".

Woods has played 14 tournaments in 2018 and made a remarkable rise. Behind him, Koepka holed his two birdie putts.

Facing the most important drive of the day on the par-5 17th, Woods sent it sailing to the right and it embedded in a hazard along the banks of a creek. He scrambled for a par there when he really needed a birdie and was three back once he reached the 18th fairway.

Woods' chances finally receded when he could only make par on the long 17th after finding trouble off the tee while Koepka was reeling off successive birdies on the 15th and 16th to pull clear in the three-way battle for the Wanamaker Trophy.

"I got off to a really slow start, so I was not super comfortable early in the round", Scott told reporters.

"Unfortunately, just didn't have it the last couple of holes".

It wasn't going to happen. He is also 20th in FedEx Cup points, meaning he is a lock for the first three FedEx Cup playoff events and in good position to make the Tour Championship for the top 30. I didn't know what swing I was going to use, either.

"Oh, God: I didn't know if I was going to play golf again, so, yeah", he said, later adding, "I hadn't played in two years (before this year)".

"I can see he's got that mindset".

British Open champion Francesco Molinari is in a three-strong group on seven-under, the Italian continuing the fine form he showed at Carnoustie last month.
