Putin Expects Trump to Fulfill Pre-Election Promise, Improve Ties With Russia

And Trump frequently boasts of his country's nuclear capabilities, warning in April that Russian Federation should "get ready" for a USA missile strike on Syria.

Under Trump, the United States has abandoned its traditional role in the G-7 of pressing for freer global trade.

For the past week, it was an open question in official Ottawa whether Trump would actually show up, given his recent trade actions against the other G7 countries and his increasingly antagonistic comments about their approach to global relations.

"President Putin is the leader of a great country, and is influential around the world", Xi said.

"Why are we having a meeting without Russian Federation being in the meeting?"

"We both believe that the current trade protectionism has increased, and there are many uncertainties in the recovery of the world economy".

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday opened a regional security summit attended by Russian Federation and Iran with boasts of the bloc's "unity", just as a fractious G7 gathering was mired in divisions between Europe and the US. He says gender equality must "cut through" everything the G-7 does.

Let's set the context here.

'We are very clear that Canada does not pose a national security threat to the United States, ' she said.

Moscow was kicked out of the group, then the G-8, four years ago after it annexed Crimea.

But a U.S. -Russia summit isn't a reward for Putin, who does not need any kind of legitimacy from Washington.

Construction of the World Cup fan zone outside Moscow's top university is fuelling a rare protest in Russian Federation as students worry that the thousands of partying football fans will destroy one of the capital's few green spaces.

Rafael Nadal Wins 11th French Open Title
Once he moved two sets ahead it merely became a race against time for Nadal to finish the match off before the rain arrived. The victory saw Federer surpass American legend Pete Sampras becoming the most successful open era male player on grass.

Yet Trump wants them there, and other than his apparently desperate desire to hang out with Putin, it's hard to imagine why.

"We have a world to run", Trump said. "It's in everyone's interests", Conte added, in an echo of Trump's own words after the combative USA president shocked both his allies and those back in his own country when he announced in Washington that, "Russia should be in (sic) this meeting", Trump told reporters in Washington as he left the White House.

And he promised a "frank and direct discussion" with Trump in Canada.

But to Trump, the very idea of worldwide cooperation is anathema. Either we're the victor or the loser, and if it's not obvious that we're the victor then we must be the loser, the chump, the sap, the sucker.

Ahead of the encounter, the allies made no secret of their anger at Trump's stance, pointed starkly to fears that he is undermining the rules-based world order and driving former USA friends into a damaging trade war.

The United States and European Union will establish a dialogue on trade within the next two weeks, a French official said on Friday, signalling a modest step forward for bitterly divided allies at a Group of Seven summit in Canada. That's an idea he just can not wrap his head around.

And at the same time as western nations are at loggerheads, the U.S. president seems more at home with autocrats than with Washington's traditional allies.

"Looking forward to straightening out unfair Trade Deals with the G-7 countries", Trump posted on Twitter early Friday. "Even though China's state-owned media touted the so-called rich fruits of the SCO, only a few tangible achievements were in fact generated from this summit". This too is revealing.

The prospect that he could be moving toward an even greater protectionist trade policy is likely to chill financial markets anxious about tit-for-tit escalation that could lead to a full-blown global trade war. Donald Trump's style is to go it alone.

And he might just get his way.

The last meeting between Trump and Putin was a brief exchange in Vietnam last November.
