Cahill reminds Chelsea: Hard work is a basic of the game

Antonio Conte's side went into its final Premier League match of the season needing a win and a slip-up from Liverpool to book a place in the top four, but the deposed champion failed to keep up its end of the bargain.

Antonio Conte admitted Chelsea must improve dramatically on their display at Newcastle to have any chance at all of winning the FA Cup.

However, Conte is not anxious about his future with the Blues and has insisted that his team will need to go out and win their game against Newcastle to try and get a Champions League place next season.

The Blues are said to be fretting over Hazard's future at the club following a turbulent campaign and as a result they have taken the decision to make another managerial change, with the Conte's successor needing to appeal to the Belgium international's attacking flair - as per the Telegraph. The Belgian was even unfortunate for Newcastle's 23rd-minute opener, diving desperately back to tip the ball out when Jacob Murphy diverted the ball over him, only for Dwight Gayle to react fastest and head in the rebound.

But no sooner had the visitors gained a foothold than Newcastle rendered their momentum meaningless. Dubravka saved well with his feet.

It was hard not to feel for the band of Chelsea supporters who made the longest away trip on their Premier League calendar.

Conte watched it all in stony silence on the touchline, not for the first time this season a bystander to catastrophic events.

"Don't forget two years ago, Chelsea ended the season 10th and not in the FA Cup final, not in the semi-finals of the League Cup, and they were eliminated in the last 16 against PSG in the Champions League".

Such are the vagaries of cricket and the unpredictability of the shortest format that makes heroes out of players in obscurity. Rayudu remained unbeaten on 100 off 62 deliveries (7 fours and 7 sixes) while Dhoni (20* off 14) once again returned unbeaten.

Chelsea have not won a single league game at St James Park since December 2011 and during this period, they have succumbed to three defeats with the other game ending in a draw. "But you can not sing the name of the manager if the team is doing badly". Hazard leads the club with 12 goals and will be Chelsea's go-to man on Sunday.

Defender Cahill is assured the gamers have it inside themselves to regroup and finish what has been a largely irritating marketing campaign with a trophy.

They've also scored just once in those four defeats - a goal by Ayoze Perez in a 2-1 loss at Watford.

Liverpool even had a chance to end Chelsea's pursuit at their own ground when the two outfits met last weekend in London.

Rafa Benitez labelled it a "perfect Sunday".

Lascelles would likely attract a few more suitors if he were to make the England squad heading to World Cup 2018, but he has cast doubt over his potential involvement in Russian Federation despite calls for Gareth Southgate to give him a chance.

But his vision and directness are qualities that few others available to Southgate possess.
