United States embassy Jerusalem move necessary for peace, Trump negotiator claims

The relocation of the embassy from Tel Aviv, a key campaign promise of President Donald Trump, has infuriated the Palestinians, who seek east Jerusalem as a future capital.

On Sunday, more than 1,000 Israeli settlers stormed the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in an act of provocation on the eve of U.S. relocation of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds.

The foreign diplomatic corps has not been invited as the event is considered a bilateral one, the embassy spokeswoman said.

Around 1,000 police officers will be positioned around the embassy for the inauguration, said spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

The move comes on the eve of the inauguration of the controversial new USA embassy in the city, which has angered members of the Palestinian and Muslim communities. "We're fairly optimistic that this decision will ultimately create greater stability rather than less".

The Trump administration has almost completed a long-awaited Israeli-Palestinian peace plan but is undecided on how and when to roll it out, given Palestinians' outrage over the embassy move and their contention that Washington can no longer be an honest broker.

"So we call on Ireland to join this and to move its embassy". Moving the embassy is a requirement of a 1990s U.S. law that was regularly waived by Trump's predecessors going back to Bill Clinton.
