Federal investigators have wiretapped the phone lines of Michael Cohen, the longtime personal lawyer for President Donald Trump who is under investigation for a payment he made to an adult film star who alleged she had an affair with Trump, according to two people with knowledge of the legal proceedings involving Cohen. Mueller's team is investigating whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the 2016 election, as well as whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

The claim of repayment is significant because a payment by Cohen could be seen as an illegal campaign contribution.

"I guess Jared is a fine man, you know that", Giuliani said, referring to the President's son-in-law.

"That money was not campaign money. No campaign-finance violation".

In his tweets Thursday, Trump did not say whether he knew about the payments to Cohen when they were made.

All campaign expenses, including payments and loans, are supposed to be disclosed to the FEC.

Essentially, the closer this $130,000 hush money payment over Trump's affair gets to Trump, the closer this gets to an FEC violation, and Giuliani contradicting Trump's public statements looks pretty bad in front of a judge.

Michael Cohen, attorney for The Trump Organization, arrives at Trump Tower in New York City, U.S. January 17, 2017.

The Justice Department announced last month that Cohen is under criminal investigation.

In morning tweets, the president confirmed that Cohen entered into a nondisclosure agreement with Daniels, something Trump called "very common among celebrities and people of wealth".

Some legal experts disagree.

Aside from violating campaign contribution limits and reporting requirements, there is also other, more serious risk for Trump. Notably, the money does not need to come from a campaign's coffers.

NBC reported that Cohen was wiretapped in the weeks leading up to an Federal Bureau of Investigation raid that took place last month targeting him.

Giuliani's explanation for why Trump fired Comey is, at least, the third different justification we have heard from the White House and its allies since the termination actually took place. Edwards was ultimately acquitted.

Avenatti also predicted that Trump will not serve out his term.

Giuliani, however, is a loose cannon, and is already struggling to keep his story straight.

"Just trust me, they're going to find no violations here", Giuliani said Wednesday night on Sean Hannity's show on Fox.

When Trump fired Comey past year, he and aides said it was because of the way the former FBI director handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation during the election. "Pay her. Let her go away", he explained. "He did his job". Giuliani contends that even if Trump was told about it, he wouldn't have remembered it and that he wasn't "under oath". Presumably the calculation of Team Trump is that his base exacts no cost for even the baldest of lies, even one offered as the final you-can-believe-me truth after months of prevarication. 'We will not rest until justice is served'.
