UConn Huskies Enter Columbus As Big Favorites In Final Four

They play Notre Dame on Sunday night in a matchup of teams that both have spoiled ideal seasons for mighty UConn. In the 2011 NCAA tournament, her Fighting Irish beat top-seeded Tennessee and a Maya Moore-led CT team in consecutive games before falling to Texas A&M in the championship. This latest victory came 17 years to the day of beating the Huskies the first time in the national semifinals (March 30, 2001) - and two days later the Irish on April 1 defeated Purdue 68-66 for their lone national title.

In this historic rivalry, the Irish have been a part of this time and time again. Louisville was about to celebrate a berth in the title game until Roshunda Johnson drained a 3-pointer with 5.7 seconds left, extending the game. Again on Friday, the Huskies were left to contemplate going home empty-handed - despite having won 147 of their last 149 games.

That's what happens when you coach two of the nation's best teams and play in the same conference.

UConn lost in the Final Four to Notre Dame on Friday night, in an instant classic that featured more lead changes, impossible shots, and sudden twists than any normal fan should be able to handle. None were bigger than her final two Friday. Then they were down after getting outscored 27-10 in the second. She had 47 points against Ohio State in an overtime win here on November 12 and has never looked back.

"I didn't want them to get a chance to get the ball in", Ogunbowale told ESPN of taking the shot in the final second.

Then she pointed out Shepard's 15 points and 11 rebounds. Her interior passing was also a factor in the game and she had had a team-high five assists.

Azura Stevens and Collier had been the biggest difference-makers for much of the game. In this 3-pointer revolutionary world of basketball, they still won 24 regular season games and also won the Big 12 championship, pushing their way through the tournament.

Lonzo Ball led the Lakers with 15 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds, but Caldwell-Pope couldn't find the same success . In 23 minutes, Embiid's stat line came out to 19 points, 2 assists, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks and 1 three with 1 turnover.

First the Irish were up, leading by 10 after the first quarter.

Samuelson added 16 points, making four 3-pointers in a game where UConn otherwise struggled from the perimeter.

The Huskies scored the first six points of the second period to prompt a Notre Dame timeout at 8:03.

Notre Dame Coach Muffet McGraw knows how tough that can be. The Irish trailed Texas A&M and OR at the half in the regionals and were tied with Villanova at the half in the second round - and won them all.

The Huskies led by seven at halftime, but Notre Dame used the third quarter to stay close, trailing by three heading into the fourth. And their 3-point shooters, because they can spread out the floor while driving. Instead, Notre Dame began its superior execution. Collier scored to make it a 3-point game. The Huskies are only 6 of 20 from the field with UConn fan, Oscar-winner and National Basketball Association champion Kobe Bryant in the crowd.

The top-ranked Connecticut Huskies have fallen one win short of advancing to the NCAA women's basketball championship game.

The Bulldogs ended UConn's 111-game winning streak a year ago before losing to SC in the title game.
