Ford will also have a commercial van unibody and a battery-electric vehicle platform. It will also reduce the number of variants on offer.

We already knew that Ford was working on a performance version of a battery-powered SUV; the vehicle maker used this year's reveal of the Bullitt Mustang ahead of the Detroit Motor Show to tease the idea as the "Mach 1". Those launches will be followed by four more new or redesigned SUVs that are "just around the corner", said Farley.

By shifting away from sedans, Ford is playing to its strengths.

F-series pickup trucks have fared pretty well for Ford contributing $41 billion in business. According to Jim Farley, head of global markets, Ford plans to position it as more of a Raptor-like desert runner.

Levine said the suite would be more advanced than standard packages on GM, Nissan, Honda and Toyota. Perhaps their biggest challenge will be to "convert the trust that people have historically had for the blue oval to now include the arrival of extremely smart vehicles for a smart world". Now, though, we learned that a hybrid version is officially happening.

Incorporating hybrid technology into the Mustang will improve acceleration, Farley said during a presentation.

In a press release, Ford vowed to strengthen its position especially in best-selling pick-ups, such as F-150, and SUVs, hybrids.

Lincoln will debut its crossover with the resurrected Aviator name this month at the NY auto show, and it will be based off the redesigned Ford Explorer large crossover, expected in 2019, Ford Motor Co. executives confirmed Thursday. Five of the models will offer hybrid powertrains and one battery electric. Ford noted that its passenger vehicle sales surged in February 2018 however, with its market share climbing to 12.2%.

There will be two new models targeted at off-roading. It will have a smaller, yet-to-be-named sibling. Tesla's Autopilot and Cadillac's Super Cruise, specifically, have set the standard in semi-autonomous features, but both are available only in pricey luxury vehicles. In the commercial vehicle segment, Ford pledges to bring a new Transit with 4G LTE connectivity in 2019, as well as extend production of its E-Series cutaway and stripped chassis into the 2020s. Ford says that in 2019, it will add rear automatic emergency braking to Ford Co-Pilot360 and plans to add further safety aids in the future. Additionally, the utility vehicles would be proficient enough to marmalade fuel.
