'A Wrinkle in Time' an empty adventure

And I had Meg Murry.

Ryan Coogler, another great director on the rise, took to ESPNW to pen a supportive tribute to DuVernay and her new film. A Wrinkle in Time is a rare film for children that doesn't shy away from the hard realities of life but also shows a way forward to a better world.

Obviously, the movie is based on a beloved childhood classic - one that some have said would be nearly impossible to film. Along with her prodigy of a younger brother, Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe), and her schoolyard crush, Calvin (Levi Miller), Meg travels through a wrinkle in space-time to rescue her father from a monster before he's lost forever. Four years ago, Mr. Murry disappeared without a trace and no one has heard from him. L'Engle's strength is the internal struggles of her young characters, but that's not something that translates well to the screen, which is all about external appearances.

"Close your eyes; see with mine". She's been so beaten down by circumstances, that even when "magical" women - Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Kaling), Mrs. Which (Winfrey) and Mrs. Whatsit (Witherspoon). Which (Winfrey) and Mrs. The novel's crushingly ordinary twins have been jettisoned from the movie. Which explain Meg's dad actually pulled off the tesseract and was rocketed somewhere into another dimension, and it's up to Meg, Charles Wallace and Calvin (who just keeps hanging around) to tesseract with them and help them find Dad, because if they don't, well, it'll be bad for everyone.

Before they depart for such planets as Uriel and Orion, Mrs. Zach Galifianakis pops up as a medium known as, yes, the Happy Medium. And how to retain the story's human pulse amid such an effects-dependent and design-driven project? Her career will be fine, even though the lure of a brilliant "Wrinkle in Time" feature is dampened. The third tessering, comprising a shot of Earth and a shaft of light pointing the way to the kids' next stop, makes for a handsome transition.

Democrats score big in early voting totals
Statewide, it appears incumbent Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has avoided a runoff, incumbent Land Commissioner George P. It will also consolidate and repeal several education related deductions and credits amongst other things.

At the film's Los Angeles press day, we asked Witherspoon and Kaling for the best knowledge they had dropped on them from the iconic O. But somehow the whole never quite takes off; Witherspoon's attempts at humor fall flat, Kaling's quotations don't add up to much, her decision to suddenly stop quoting and use her own words is more puzzling than anything else, and even Winfrey's huge hovering presence offers more comfort than guidance. She told us that they were one of the first aspects of the book to be removed from the script, as they were unnecessary to telling Meg's story in A Wrinkle in Time. The tone becomes bombastic rather than quietly sinister.

It's a good question, and one that Wrinkle in Time Producer Jim Whitaker addressed when I talked with him a week before the movie's release (and before I saw the movie myself).

In situations such as we find ourselves in now, I like to remind readers of Alfred Hitchcock's attitude towards literary adaptations. "Less effort on hair, wardrobe and hugs and more on dialogue and originality, I say", he wrote. It's a task that requires outer space travel and inner space musings, and thanks to a $100 million budget, the movie has the resources to do just that.

"She's often like, 'Who dat?' to me, because I've been a little busy promoting this movie", she jokingly admitted. It's a work of considerable imagination that doesn't quite soar.
