Then, without a word, he disappears.

The film picks up four years after his disappearance. Not only that, this Meg hears that she is powerful, that she is special, that everything she thought was a fault is a strength. As she barrels toward this conclusion, it becomes clear that her journey is just as much about her own growth as it is about her father. To get a sense of Meg and Charles Wallace's life before the adventure begins, the film shows a normal day at school for the two of them, and it is incredibly painful to watch. Who and Mrs. Which, the children fearless a unsafe journey to a planet that possesses all of the evil in the universe.

The movie's unique soundtrack features original tracks from an impressive line-up of artists, including Sade, DJ Khaled, Sia, Kehlani, Grown-ish stars Chloe x Halle, and FreeStyle Fellowship. Via Charles Wallace, who possesses psychic abilities, the siblings are visited by three spectacular beings - Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Storm Reid is excellent in the lead role and Deric McCabe is a scene stealer...excellent casting choices. Zach Galifiankis and Michael Pena round out the cast. This case holds true for A Wrinkle in Time as well. "It's okay to fear the answers", he assures her, and you believe it.

The story itself - adapted from that of the classic young-adult novel by Madeleine L'Engle - is a bit confusing (unless you're a physicist) so don't spent too much worrying about the fine details and go along for the ride, which is emotionally charged, tension-filled and ultimately satisfying.

Rescuing Mr. Murry will be a risky proposition, since, as readers of the book will know, It also has a way of getting in people's heads. One of my favorite lines in the film is when Mrs. Which talks about Meg being a rare, enlightened individual.

After a short prologue opens the film with a touch of character foreshadowing, we meet Meg Murry (Storm Reid), the young protagonist.

Lee, who boasts an impressive list of animated titles like Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph on her writing resume, not only adapts the iconic novel but dives into live-action for the first time with Wrinkle. And if I sound as if I'm cataloguing those virtues rather than reveling in them, well, I was once in "A Wrinkle In Time's" target audience, but I have a lot more wrinkles now.

The three Mrs. W's explain to Meg that they're looking for warriors - pure of spirit and stout of heart. Which tells her that millions and millions of decisions were made in the past to make her who she is and that have placed her where she is today. Nonetheless, "A Wrinkle in Time" still has the misfortune of feeling like it's stealing from the very things that stole from it.

Will Ava DuVernay's "A Wrinkle in Time" soon join this list of films with female directors (or co-directors)? Who wants to remember being 12? Which (Oprah Winfrey). While some critics may take issue with the continuity of the story, I submit that perhaps it's not meant for us, and that's OK.

A Wrinkle in Time releases in North America on March 9th, 2018. It's story is freakish, unnatural and one that likely wouldn't play out well on the big screen.
