Canada's women's hockey team shoots straight into Olympic semi-finals

Because of the Olympic tournament's structure, the two women's hockey rivals might still find themselves playing one another for a gold medal once again.

It is that tense and intense.

The Canadians won this game by a score of 2-1 and took first place in Group А. And the Americans also advanced to the playoffs by coming in second in this group. One snapshot of what makes these matchups so magical.

This will be the first match ever between these two countries in ice hockey.

Truth be told, Rene Bourque had a greater offensive impact in Canada's 5-1 win over the Swiss in the tournament opener for both teams. "Early on, it was unhealthy".

Just note that the BBC will not cover ALL the events - just a selection of them - and while you can record locally on your PVR, you won't be able to record to the cloud.

Now it's less about anger and more about hockey at its best and the odd juxtaposition that exists between the only countries dominating a multi-countried sport.

Canada ended up losing the game. The reigning gold medal holders the United States of America will also be highly favoured, with veterans Mark Arcobello, Chris Bourque and Brian Gionta leading the charge. It should be another classic in the gold medal game February 25.

Asked if it felt even better to win the game after the controversy, Dupont replied: "It does".

One look at US forward Brianna Decker's face, sweaty and frowning Thursday after a 2-1 loss to Canada, dispelled the notion that the teams' preliminary-round finale meant nothing because both had clinched spots in the Olympic semifinals.

The Flu Season Keeps Getting Worse
Federal officials have received reports of spot shortages of antivirals, but they say those drugs are available. What about for children and babies? Well, doctors say it's more of a complex answer.

Instead, Canada won its 23rd straight Olympic game since losing to the Americans in the gold-medal contest back in 1998.

Duhamel and Radford, two-time world champions competing in their final season, scored 153.33 points for their program to Adele's "Hometown Glory", and 230.15 total points. The younger Harvey has focused his worldwide efforts on cross country skiing as of late, but represented Canada twice at the junior world championships in mountain biking and continues to ride and race on and off road in the summer months.

The United States certainly had plenty of chances, outshooting Canada 45-23. Shots don't matter. Possession doesn't matter.

"We can play a little looser now because we came in as team number 10 (of 10)", said Denmark second Julie Hogh.

The semifinals will be played Monday, giving the usa time to correct what didn't go as it hoped Thursday. They vacation together. They work together. Pride is on the line, and maybe a spot in the quarterfinals. They are the defending Canadian and world champions and came out of a tough field to win the right to represent Canada in December's Olympic curling trials.

And still there is a certain desperation to it. Ottawa speedskater Ivanie Blondin was fifth in the women's 5,000 metres, and cross-country skier Alex Harvey of Saint-Ferreol-les-Neiges, Que., was seventh in the men's 15-kilometre free. Nurse was watching the game at her grandmother's house, and fashioned herself a gold medal with supplies from the craft room. Every once in a while the Yankees and the Red Sox are alone, the way the Dodgers and the Giants are alone.

Lee said Canada will have to grind its way through the tournament, agreeing that it probably won't be pretty.

"I'm kind of at a loss for words in this moment", he said. "We'll take that any day".

After a devastating defeat against Slovenia in their opening game, Team USA will look to rebound vs. Slovakia.

Favourite or underdog, the designation is basically meaningless now. "They play simple. They play hard". "Hopefully that was my last one".
