'Dreamers' can earn U.S. citizenship in 10-12 years

Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said President Trump campaigned on securing the border, and he should fulfill that commitment before discussing what to do with "Dreamers".

Initial reaction fell squarely along partisan lines. They probably want citizenship for illegal childhood arrivals even more than they want to prevent the wall from being built.

"He uses [Dreamers] as a tool to tear apart our legal immigration system and adopt the wish list that anti-immigration hardliners have advocated for for years", Schumer said on Twitter Friday. Dick Durbin, a Democrat, and Sen.

"We're going to morph into it", the president told reporters on Wednesday during a meeting with his chief of staff John Kelly. And cutting the diversity visa lottery is not as straightforward as some believe - especially to members of the Congressional Black Caucus and other affinity caucuses, who are vocal about the importance of immigration from lesser represented countries. Patrick Leahy asked about Trump's forthcoming immigration framework. "And I think they're willing to shift more, and so am I", Trump said, referring to Rep.

"It's going to happen, at some point in the future, over a period of 10 to 12 years". In exchange, about 1.8 million younger illegal immigrants - the number of people eligible for DACA under the program's original guidelines - would be offered a path to citizenship. "Sometimes taking small steps in the right direction is a good way to get where you want to go". "Trump and [White House aide] Stephen Miller killed DACA and created the crisis that immigrant youth are facing". Republicans shouldn't be tough to get. While the proposal's pathway to citizenship for almost 2 million undocumented immigrants will earn plaudits from many Democrats, the framework also includes several hardline immigration reforms that Democrats may find hard to swallow. Conservative Republican Senator Tom Cotton called the plan "generous and humane, while also being responsible". "I think a pathway to citizenship is very much in the realm of possibility".

What is Trump's plan for Daca?

Groups that oppose allowing illegal immigrants to remain in the USA also voiced criticism, and urged Congress to take its time.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the lead lawmakers in the immigration negotiations, said Mr Trump's comments signalled a major breakthrough.

"If the president wants to be constructive. he should take a clear position, but not change it within a matter of hours", Coons said.

Lawmakers from both parties tried to find common ground on Thursday as they warily worked on bipartisan bills in the wake of a three day government shutdown. 'Long hours and Fake reporting makes your job more hard, but it is always great to WIN, and few have won more than us!'

The biggest problem any Trump plan could face is with hardcore conservatives.

He told reporters the deal would be contingent on border wall funding. "Doing so is inconsistent with the promises we made to the men and women who elected us".

President Trump is seeking $25 billion for his propose wall, as well as stricter immigration controls in exchange for giving 1.8 million young immigrants a pathway to citizenship.
