NLDS Game 4 to Be Played Wednesday — Cubs-Nationals Postponed

Pulling away from the Brewers and Cardinals in the final two weeks of the season, the Cubs showed themselves to be a bounce back bunch as they made the playoffs for a third-straight time. Otherwise, they'd been shackled by Cubs pitching - they were 3 for 42 for the series entering the fifth inning Saturday - and seemed destined to face a winter of ignominy after the Nationals lost in the first round for the fourth time in six seasons.

"We made mistakes. We made some errors, but then we made some great plays". "But every time I toe the rubber, I'm trying to do my best to finish that game". Murphy shot a single into left field to bring up Ryan Zimmerman. First pitch for the Game 4 on Wednesday has been scheduled for 4:08 Eastern, and it will be broadcast on TBS.

That looked like it might be enough for Scherzer, who had ripped through Chicago's order easily.

Update (6:31 PM ET): Ben Zobrist broke up the no-hitter with a double to left-center field with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

Like Maddon's call, this one was plenty questionable. He was aiming for around 100 pitches on Monday.

Scherzer is making his first appearance since he tweaked his right hamstring in his final regular-season start on September 30.

Baker has certainly had some postseason missteps this month, but players getting sick at exactly the wrong time probably isn't his fault unless he fostered a culture of awful hygiene or something.

They didn't. The team clarified later, explaining that Baker misspoke. Why risk the starter blowing it when a fresh reliever could save it? The question will be how long will the leash be for the right-hander.

Lesser teams than the Cubs might not have pulled this one out.

Both teams escaped those innings without further damage, but the Nationals' bullpen blinked first.

Gardner led off with a good at-bat, eventually flying to left. "But here's the process that I go through". Really, it's kind of all hands on deck...and then we'll make a decision, " Girardi said before Game 3.

CHICAGO (AP) - The showers came a little late, but the rain that soaked Wrigley Field and washed out Game 4 of the NL Division Series followed Tuesday's forecast pretty closely.

Game 4 of the best-of-five series is Tuesday.

"We have full confidence in Tanner", Baker said.

"When I was pinch-hitting for him, it was on the top of my mind, thinking, 'I want to help him [Schwarber], and I'm glad I got the job done", Almora said.

But that momentum didn't carry over to Game 3.

Strasburg struck out 10 in seven innings and was charged with two unearned runs and three hits in Washington's 3-0 loss. After Zimmerman's RBI double on Monday, the next 10 Nationals went down in order. He's not, you know, Bryce Harper for nothing. In fact, his career numbers tend to improve the more rest he has between starts. "We know we're going to have a close game".

The Cubs will turn to Jose Quintana, acquired in July from the Chicago White Sox, who will be making his first career start.

After an excellent 2016 that saw Roark post a 2.83 ERA in 210 innings, he took a step backward this year with a 4.67 ERA in 181.1 innings.

There is no other real option for the Nationals, though. If the Nationals lose and are facing elimination, Baker could put Game 1 starter Stephen Strasburg back on the mound on three days of rest. "And once the game starts, we're never out of it until the last out is recorded".

Scherzer is the second Washington pitcher to carry a no-hitter into the sixth in the series. He's the odds-on favorite to win his second consecutive National League Cy Young award and his third Cy in the past five seasons.
