Petty was taken to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital, where he died on Monday at 11:40 p.m. ET.

CBS released a statement on Monday about the snafu.

The world is reacting to Petty's death.

His daughter lashed out at music magazine Rolling Stone, one of a number of media outlets that ran obituaries of Petty based on other news organizations' reports. "We'd have a general structure worked out, but I'd still leave it up to the musicians, having them contribute to the process too". He was found in critical condition at his home in Malibu, Calif., Sunday night after suffering full cardiac arrest, as first reported by the website TMZ.

The band became Mudcrutch, which soon transitioned in Los Angeles into Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. We had to watch her fade out slowly.
