Nadal hits 50 at US Open, Pliskova races through

"I believe it is a nightmare for Federer to play Nadal".

Rafael Nadal upheld his end of the bargain for a mouth-watering US Open semi-final against Roger Federer by dismantling an overwhelmed Andrey Rublev in Thursday's (AEST) last-eight tie.

Marc Krajekian, a 10-year-old cancer survivor from North Carolina, got to practice with his hero after Federer previously promised he'd play with the boy.

It will be a rematch of the 2009 U.S. Open final, when del Potro won his only Grand Slam title.

If Federer can get past the towering Argentine it would set up a landmark meeting between the Swiss and Nadal, who has won the US Open twice.

"I was sick the last two days".

Does it really matter who Federer will face in the round of last eight?

Del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, will next face 19-time Grand Slam champion Federer, the Swiss third seed, who got past German 33rd seed Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Federer now turns his attention to a quarterfinal match against Juan Martin del Potro with a potential semifinal showdown against Rafael Nadal looming. The twelve seed in NY, the 26-year-old bears the Spaniard's hopes on this side of the board while, Nadal is holding the headlines of the upper half. There were five previous occasions when they were a round away from having it happen, but one or the other lost.

"Rafa is the real champion and I am going to just try and enjoy it", said Rublev, looking ahead to facing one of his childhood idols.

Rublev offered some resistance to start the second but it was brief, Nadal breaking to go up 3-2 and again to close out the set.

This year's opener will be just the second Top 5 matchup during this span, and the first to include the preseason No. 1. In that installment, we will be discussing all the games that will be played on August 31st and the 1st of September.

Vandeweghe, having conquered her fear of majors, is inching ever closer to the head of the gifted US women hoping to crack the Grand Slam code.

Who do you think will win the match?

Play on the featured court will then wrap up with a match between women's fourth seed Elina Svitolina and 15th seed Madison Keys.

Federer is frequently called the greatest tennis player since the start of the Open era in 1968.

Women's top seed Kristina Pliskova, meanwhile, needed just 46 minutes to crush American Jennifer Brady, 6-1, 6-0 and make her third major quarter-final of 2017.

Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens advanced Sunday.

Despite clearly being blessed with attacking weapons - 12 aces and 48 winners saw him past Goffin - Rublev will surely find that Nadal's defensive skills force his game to its limits and beyond.

Rublev was the youngest U.S. Open quarterfinalist since Andy Roddick was also 19 in 2001, but he didn't give himself much chance, committing 43 unforced errors and seven double faults.

Truth is, the way Nadal is playing at the moment, few would be able to offer much in the way of a challenge. Showing the aggression and footwork necessary to win a slam, del Potro ran through the third set 6-1, as a perplexed Thiem didn't seem to know how to handle either the pressure or game of the crowd favorite.

"He's been playing better and better every day", Moya said. It was a good match.
