Dara Khosrowshahi confirmed as Uber's new boss

Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has been named Uber's top executive, taking the hard job of mending the dysfunctional ride-hailing giant and turning it from money-losing behemoth to a profitable company.

Expedia disclosed an internal message in an SEC filing Monday morning, in which Expedia Chairman Barry Diller wrote that "Nothing has been yet finalized, but having extensively discussed this with Dara I believe it is his intention to accept".

Uber spokespeople were not immediately available for comment. Whitman, chief executive of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, reportedly demanded that Uber strengthen its governance structure and settle its lawsuit with investor Benchmark if it wanted her as chief executive.

Meg Whitman came tantalizingly close to scoring Uber's vacant CEO role this weekend, only to be passed over at the last minute in favor of rival candidate Dara Khosrowshahi of Expedia. He held a number of executive positions at the company, and was finally made CEO of Expedia in 2005, when the travel brand was spun off by IAC.

The drumbeat of Uber news just won't stop.

Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument would shrink under Trump administration plan
But many western Republicans criticized large protected areas such as Bears Ears as a distortion of the law's original intent. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has recommended that President Trump reduce the size of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.

"I am excited to welcome Dara Khosrowshahi as Uber's next CEO", Kalanick said in a statement on Tuesday. He turned Expedia into the biggest online travel agency in the USA, owning travel sites like Hotels.com, Orbitz, Trivago, HomeAway, Travelocity as well as sites for vacation rentals, vehicle rentals and so on.

Khosrowshahi, who has a public-facing Twitter account, has been "liking" several tweets that mention him as the next Uber CEO. He studied electrical engineering at Brown University in the U.S., before embarking on a career in finance. After Kalanick was pushed out, he scrambled to find allies who would help him make a comeback, the people with knowledge of the matter said. But he will also have an incredibly tough job steering the ride-hailing company back to stability, after months of controversies and bitter infighting at the board level. Among other allegations, Benchmark accused Kalanick of trying to "acquire the power to pack the Board to facilitate his desired re-appointment as Uber's CEO".

Khosrowshahi steps into the role amidst myriad legal battles, executive vacancies, and Uber's now-famous tumultuous workplace culture.

The firm also continues to report heavy losses. He is now being sued by another member of Uber's board, venture capital firm Benchmark Capital Partners, who are accusing him of fraud.

Uber Technologies Inc said on Tuesday it was cooperating with a preliminary investigation led by the US Department of Justice into possible violations of bribery laws.
