The Trades That Made the Kyrie Irving Trade Possible

SB Nation's Kristian Winfield wrote a great post about how Crowder is exactly the role player LeBron James and the Cavs needed.

"That's the only way to be to the kid!" 'Nothing but respect and what a ride it was'. "Because I don't really know what it takes to put a team over the top, because I haven't played yet". With LeBron James' return feeling anything but inevitable, it makes sense for the Cavs to free up the books a bit.

According to reports, the Celtics had "significant concern" about the state of Thomas' health and whether he would be rehabilitated by the beginning of the regular season.

The bigger questions rest with the Celtics. A Kyrie for Irving trade just didn't make sense in their minds, and they're probably right.

Kyrie Irving is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

I'll just say it, Cleveland clearly won this trade for the upcoming year. His intensity and toughness will be appreciated by the King and his 39.8% shooting from three previous year will help space the floor for Thomas to drive as he did in Boston. "I'll miss (Isaiah's) fire, but I'm really exhausted of the guys on "SportsCenter" arguing about whether or not Isaiah Thomas is too short to play in the National Basketball Association". I don't know how to handle all the trade talks.

"I was watching it on TV and I saw "breaking news" come across", he said.

"I'm not sure", Tatum said. Crowder isn't a star but he's a very good player, the type of player the Cavs needed but had few means to acquire as a capped out team. That could help the Cavs in the East and if they match up with the Warriors in the NBA Finals once again. They've been working from an unprecedented position of strength, sitting on their assets, biding their time and waiting for an opportunity like this to turn those pieces into a superstar.

It will be interesting because Cleveland may package one of those guys and the pick that they received in the deal to try to land some help around the trade deadline during the season.

Making this trade may give James some faith in new Cleveland general manager Koby Altman.

Irving also shot 40 percent from the three-point line last season, while Thomas shot 38 percent from behind the arc.

Cleveland does not now have much in the way of young talent on their roster, so getting Boston to include Zizic in the deal was a nice sweetener.

In their three years together since James returned from Miami in 2014, the Cavaliers have been to the NBA Finals three consecutive seasons.
