House Democrat: 'We need new leadership'

As NPR's Geoff Bennett reports, Democrats in Congress have spent the day trying to figure out what they need to do differently if they want to take back control of the House next year.

Several prominent Democrats said the party needed to rethink its approach heading into next year's congressional elections, when Democrats need to pick up 24 seats to regain control of the House of Representatives. Ryan added, "I don't think it's fair".

"We're still going to be on the defense in November of 2018", with Trump a likely "liability", he added.

The political eyes of Texas were closely watching Georgia's special election, with both Texas Democrats and Republicans claiming the election bodes well for them in 2018.

Of the 15 congressional districts with the highest levels of education, 13 are held by Democrats - Georgia's 6th District is one of the exceptions.

"Senator Reid was a target, Senator Daschle was a target, Tip O'Neill was a target", Pelosi said.

Trump calls House health bill he backed 'mean'
Cory Gardner of Colorado and John Thune of South Dakota quickly scurried into another health care meeting on Capitol Hill. The CBPP concluded that the Senate's working version has " virtually the same overall harmful impacts as the House bill".

"Unfortunately a loss for us, but not good news for them", Pelosi told the rank-and-file in a closed-door meeting Wednesday morning, according to Democrats present.

Michael Owens leads the Cobb County Democrats and chaired a 6th District task force meant to coordinate the efforts of the party in Cobb, Fulton and DeKalb counties.

Nonetheless, Republicans shouldn't get too cocky. "Personally I think it's time for a new generation of leadership in the party". In remarks to The Guardian, Handel said, "The lack of civility in society as a whole, some of it, I believe, is very much fueled by social media and frankly, it's fueled by the fact that journalism is not journalism any more".

The Georgia race featured a nail-biting finish, with the possibility of flipping a traditionally-Republican district. "It's clear that tactic still works, still packs a punch, and it's part of a broader toxicity of being part of the Democratic brand regardless of where you are".

Ryan isn't saying whether or not he will challenge Pelosi as House Minority Leader again. "The Democratic Party needs new leadership now", he tweeted.

Ossoff was tied directly to Pelosi, and her San Francisco-centered base, in a number of Republican-funded campaign commercials targeting voters in the highly-educated and conservative suburban district he was hoping to win. "When it comes to personal ambition and having fun on TV, have your fun", she said.

These Democrats might be on to something, especially in light of the way Pelosi figured into the Republican campaign in Georgia.
