Celtics Draft Rumors: Why Kansas Forward Josh Jackson Won't Workout For Boston

Kyle Lowry used to play in Houston and he does not intend on returning to the Toronto Raptors, while a report has surfaced that the Atlanta Hawks are looking to pull off a sign and trade involving their all-star power forward Paul Millsap. This has more to do with Jimmy Butler winding up in Minnesota. It wasn't Kristaps Porzingis. As expected, one-and-doners Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball led the way.

The Celtics originally owned the No. 1 overall pick (acquired from Brooklyn in 2013), but they were confident that Tatum would be available at No. 3, so they made a decision to trade down.

"We were very excited that he was still there", Ainge said.

The pick that the Celtics could wind up offering the Pacers would likely be a future first round pick with some lottery protections.

The Boston draft night yawn was not received well in the national media.

Friday, general manager Danny Ainge jokingly threw a hat on Tatum that landed sideways, drawing a nice laugh from the crowd of about 75 all dawning "Welcome to Boston" shirts, and the introduction was underway.

For the second consecutive year, Boston selects a wing player with the third pick in the draft after taking Jaylen Brown last June. Now they add Fultz to a promising young core that includes Rookie of the Year finalists Joel Embiid and Dario Saric, plus Ben Simmons, the top pick from last year who sat out all season with a foot injury. Tatum has strong developmental potential, and even trade value going forward. President of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said before the draft Thursday night that point guard was the team's biggest need, and the club chose to address it. Smith will get a strong chance to start with the Mavericks believing that Yogi Ferrell is better-suited to a backup role even though he made a splash that earned him a two-year deal after the undrafted rookie joined the Mavericks on a 10-day contract. That idea was backed up in yesterday's press conference. His offensive scoring abilities, similar to Tatum, could make him a great option off the bench to bring some much-needed scoring that the Celtics bench sometimes couldn't provide whenever Isaiah Thomas and the starters were off the floor.

Wind howling as final round at Erin Hills gets under way
Any time you go home from a golf tournament with a million-dollar cheque there's usually a trophy to go along with it. Thomas followed Saturday's record-setting nine-under par 63 with a three-over 75 to finish eight shots back.

"I look at it as a great opportunity", Tatum said.

"[Stevens] just said guys that are my size and are versatile, offensively and defensively, it's hard not to play those guys", Tatum said earlier this week. This year? Jayson Tatum. Most of the guys that stick around there are all on the same page and they just have one way of doing things.

When asked about other prospects, Bilas said Jarrett Allen of Texas "is a good prospect" but is raw and his game needs developing; Louisville's Donovan Mitchell - "a$3 powerful athlete who can really defend". It's kind of like the "Patriot Way" - only greener. The NBA free agency period starts a week from today, on July 1, and everyone in Boston is expecting the Celtics to go out and sign a big-name player.

It's a word Celtics fans have had to chant as a mantra as Danny Ainge goes about the unenviable task of trying to turn this team into one that can compete with the Cavaliers and the teams in the Western Conference.

The Celtics brass said they've had their eye on Tatum and viewed him as the best player in the draft.

But for now, the Celtics are happy with their guy.
