Top House GOP leader shot at congressional baseball practice

Authorities say James Hodgkinson from IL opened fire Wednesday morning on a group of republican lawmakers, as they practiced for an annual congressional baseball game in Virginia.

The shooter who opened fire on Republican congressmen at baseball field in Virginia had blasted GOP lawmakers and supported taxing the rich for years, according to a review of more than two dozen letters he wrote to his local hometown newspaper.

According to The Washington Post, Charles Orear, 50, a restaurant manager from St. Louis, said that he became friendly with Hodgkinson during their work together in Iowa on Sanders's presidential campaign.

The Associated Press stated that Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala, told reporters that two police officers and several other people at the baseball practice were shot.

President Donald Trump announced earlier that the gunman had died at a D.C. hospital but did not name the shooter.

Hodgkinson's Facebook profile featured a cover photo of Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont who lost to Hillary Clinton in his bid to be the Democratic Party's presidential candidate in 2016.

"They didn't really interact with anybody around here", said Schamleffel "They just were to themselves".

"Every issue that we were working on, he was not in support of", Representative Mike Bost of IL, the Republican lawmaker who represented Hodgkins' district, said, adding that while he was always angry about the GOP agenda, he never crossed the line.

Filous said she saw the shooter hit a uniformed law enforcement officer, who she said was later evacuated by helicopter.

Hodgkinson is believed by investigators to have been a person "of strong views", a senior United States official said.

An acquaintance of the suspect confirmed that he had campaigned for Sanders during the election.

They said he pretty much kept to himself but was nice, he would wave when people passed by and invite everyone to his Halloween party. Orear said he had no idea that Hodgkinson would be involved in something like a shooting.
