On Flag Day, don't forget your United States flag etiquette

During his meeting with EU Council President Donald Tusk, the American flag displayed in the background contained 51 stars arranged in three rows of nine stars and three rows of eight instead of the usual nine alternating rows of five or six stars.

It's no surprise that the American flag has gone through many changes over the years, just as the country and the world have. Greeting card and candy companies don't make tons of money from it. Generations have looked to it as they steeled their resolve, and an unbroken chain of men and women in uniform has served under our flag.

Yet it is as wholesome and American as Mom and apple pie. It was only the first instance of his lifelong devotion to annual celebrations of the USA flag.

By the mid 1890's the observance of Flag Day on June 14 was a popular event.

Most versions of Flag Day's founding credit a Fredonia, Wis., teacher named BJ Cigrand with inspiring the day after he instructed his students to observe what he called "Flag Birthday". So there is a lag time in getting the flags produced and getting the distribution. Most are probably in good shape. In 1893, the Society of Colonial Dames succeeded in getting a resolution passed to have the flag displayed on all of the city's public buildings.

It should not be draped over the hood, top, sides or back of a vehicle or a boat.

When displayed with local, state or society flags, the US flag should be at the center and highest point.

It has always been held that the first flag was sewn by Betsy Ross, a Philadelphia seamstress who was supposedly commissioned by George Washington in June 1776 to create a flag for the new nation in anticipation of a declaration of its independence.

On Memorial Day the flag should be flown at half-staff until noon.

Interestingly, no official provision was made for the proportions of the American flag. The sun and winds caused me to become tattered and torn.

The U.S. flag is a precious symbol of liberties secured by the sacrifices of our service members. Do not throw the flag in the trash. This form of political protest or dissent, a rarely exercised form of free speech, can be offensive.

The post actually has a burn pit that was built as an Eagle Scout project and its primary goal is for the proper disposal of old American flags.

The flag represents respect. We agree with the late Sen. The flag of the United States has not been created by rhetorical sentences in declarations of independence and in bills of rights. We salute it, celebrate it, care for it, display it carefully and dispose of it reverently, not because of what it is, but what it represents.
