Browns secure Garrett; add Peppers, Njoku

Michigan Wolverines linebacker Jabrill Peppers (5) runs with the ball against Michigan State Spartans safety Grayson Miller (44) during the first quarter of a game at Spartan Stadium.

Of the 10 defensive ends drafted No. 1 overall, five have been named first-team All-Pro: Williams, Bruce Smith, Lee Roy Selmon, Too Tall Jones and Bubba Smith.

The first big surprise of the night did not take long as the Bears handed the Niners their third-round pick (67th overall) and fourth-round choice and Chicago's third-rounder next year to guarantee they could add Trubisky to their roster.

In 2009, Angelo gave up two first-round picks to get Jay Cutler and Emery doubled down on Cutler with a mega-bucks contract extension.

Although Trubisky left North Carolina as the most accurate passer in Tar Heels history, he only started 13 games while in college.

Following a stunning trade to move up and select quarterback Mitchell Trubisky at No. 2 on Thursday, the Bears traded down in Round 2 with Arizona on Friday night and selected Division II tight end Adam Shaheen. Once again, it proved that for all of the pre-draft chatter, rumors and exclusive reports, nobody really knows how it will all go down. He'll be all over the place and is someone who could have an immediate impact. Garrett first spoke with Brown before getting on with coach Hue Jackson, who pumped up the 21-year-old.

To be fair, the Browns were 1-15 previous year and need help everywhere.

"We wanted to come away with a number of young players we felt good about", Browns executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said. The Texans are in prime position to win now and are feeling pressure from the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts, but trading up to get Watson could come back to haunt the team if they miss the postseason in 2017.

But with Deshaun Watson, the experienced, national championship quarterback from Clemson, staring them at the face when their No. 12 overall pick arrived, the Browns blinked.

As the round wound down, several players with off-field issues went off the board. The running-back was selected at #8 by Carolina Panthers, and is the son of three-time Super Bowl champion Ed McCaffrey.

Houston then took the quarterback the Browns could have - should have? - taken. Two more Crimson Tide players went in the next three picks: DE Jonathan Allen to Washington and tight end O.J. Howard to Tampa Bay.

Eight of the first 12 players selected were offensive skill players.
