North Korea says Syria airstrikes prove its nukes justified

State-run Chinese tabloid Global Times said the meeting "served as an indicator that the China-U.S. relationship is still very much on course since the Trump administration took office in January" and it was likely the two nations would develop a more "pragmatic relationship".

Trump hosted the Chinese President for a two-day visit at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, the BBC reported on Saturday.

On trade there was agreement for a 100-day assessment of differences on economic issues.

As the two presidents went into their final lunch there were no specifics though, and in the aftermath of the US missile strike on Syria, all the big questions which bedevil the US China relationship have been kicked down the road for President Trump's visit to China later this year. According to USA sources, Xi expressed to Trump his understanding for the attack. Foreign relations committee member senator Ed Markey (D-MA) expressed the feeling of many, suggesting that an increased United States military presence in the region will result in "an escalation of tension that could lead to nuclear war". "The summit apparently agreed to tread water".

Trump talked up the meeting with lots of tough rhetoric about how he was going to get China to fully exert its influence over North Korea or, if he needed to, go it alone, saying Washington could "totally" resolve the issue without China's help.

Xi and Trump approved of the preliminary results of the two dialogue mechanisms.

Following the summit, President Xi agreed to work on a 100-day plan for trade talks aimed at boosting U.S. exports and reducing China's trade surplus with the United States.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the USA and China have agreed to increase cooperation on trying to get North Korea's to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

On the campaign trail, Trump attacked China's unfair trade and fiscal practices, and vowed to revive blue collar American jobs and counter China with protectionist measures.

Both the USA and China differ on their approach to resolve the internal strife in Syria.

"For President Xi, this will be embarrassing internationally because in so many settings and so many venues China has condemned the United States for unilateral military action in the past, and this is certainly a unilateral action", he said. It will bring together cabinet members for discussions on security, the economy, law enforcement, cybersecurity and cultural issues, among others. The summit considered to be pioneer meeting resetting the tone of US-China relations in the new era.

For Xi, who is entering a twice-a-decade Communist Party congress in the fall, the meeting with Trump was more about stabilizing the critical U.S.

Trump and Xi, politicians with distinctly different styles and experience levels, appeared cordial and businesslike in their initial interactions, with no outward sign of tensions.

China and the United States agree Pyongyang's programs are a serious problem, but have not seen eye-to-eye on how to respond.

In Beijing, China's Foreign Ministry urged all parties in Syria to find a political settlement.

Trump has repeatedly hammered China for exporting more to the USA than it buys.

Still, it remains to be seen how long the good feelings will last. Trump kicked off his presidential positioning by bristling against Beijing.

Trump reportedly informed Xi about the attack after a dinner on Thursday.

The Chinese media believed so too, noting their similarities.

"There is a real commitment to work together to see if this can not be resolved in a peaceful way", said Tillerson.

China is ready to enhance law-enforcement cooperation with the USA side, said Xi, calling on the two sides to jointly combat transnational crimes such as drug trafficking, child trafficking, money laundering, cyber crime and organized crime.
