Thurston High School graduate Dan Straily (1-1) allowed three runs, two earned, in five innings for his first victory since joining Miami. They sent reliever Adam Morgan to Triple A after he was pounded for seven hits, including four homers, in 3 2/3 innings.
Yoenis Cespedes became the first member of the Mets to have multiple three-homer games for the team. He gave up six runs on eight hits before a visit from the Phillies trainer with one out in the third and a 3-2 count on Travis d'Arnaud.
Matt Harvey has never pitched against Yoenis Cespedes, but the New York Mets right-hander surmised after Tuesday's game, having witnessed all of his teammate's power, that he may have to walk him if he ever does.
The Mets hit seven home runs in total, three by Cespedes, two by Duda, one by d'Arnaud and one by Cabrera.
The New York Mets outfielder broke the game wide open in the first with this shot to dead center in the top of the first, a 3-run jack. Mackanin seemed reassured that the incident didn't stem from bad blood Ramos harbored from a walk-off home run that Cabrera launched and then lustily celebrated last September 22 at Citi Field.
While Mackanin has tried to inform the outfielder of how his gestures can be perceived by opponents (which includes 14 hit-by-pitches in the last two years), the manager also won't try to legislate that flair out of him.
One thing upsetting Phil Simms over CBS demotion
Another one to keep an eye on is Jerry Jones himself with the family making the push to do it now that he's in the Hall of Fame. He exemplifies that stuff. "It's going to be a great challenge for me", Romo said on a conference call arranged by CBS .
After the game, NY manager Terry Collins classified Harvey's injury as a cramp and said the right-hander is expected to make his next scheduled start. The Mets have won 28 of 40 games against the Phillies since the start of the 2015 season. "It's satisfying to keep the team in the ballgame and win, but you don't want first innings (like that)". He is what you would call, if not an "injury risk", then perhaps a "health risk" or at least a "six earned runs in less than three innings" risk. Cespedes now has four home runs on the season. He finished 4-for-6 with three homers, a double and five RBIs. Franco cranked a no-doubter over the left field wall off of Matt Harvey in the second inning.
He would then double to center in his next at bat in the seventh before grounding out to the shortstop in the eighth. "They like to hit here", Collins said.
Of course, the Phillies have Odubel Herrera - who has been known to flip his bat after walks. With the lefty-lefty set up intact, Rodriguez hung a 1-2 curveball and Bruce didn't miss the mistake.
It's his first trip to the big leagues after spending the first six years of his professional career in the minors.
Phillies: RHP Vince Velasquez (0-1, 9.00) gets his second start.
