Team USA overpowers Puerto Rico to win its first World Baseball Classic

The victory marked the first time the US has won the World Baseball Classic in the team's first trip to the championship game in four editions of the event.

Hosmer started ahead of Goldschmidt on Tuesday, when the United States beat Japan in the WBC semifinal game, 2-1. It then played a flawless game against an All-Star-laden Puerto Rican squad that hadn't lost a game in the tournament. The right-hander took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, before allowing a double.

Puerto Rico third baseman Carlos Correa did not deny the team's plans to go to Puerto Rico following Wednesday's game but denied it was because they were confident they would beat the United States.

Puerto Rico came into Monday's World Baseball Classic semifinal game against The Netherlands with an undefeated record, and they'll carry that unblemished mark into Wednesday's title contest as they notched a 4-3 extra innings triumph.

Trailing 9-5 in the bottom of the ninth off their first-round game, Italy scored five runs off Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna - without making an out. Stroman left with a 7-0, having struck out three and allowed just a walk in addition to that. Stroman, Dyson, Neshek and Robertson combined to shutout Puerto Rico, giving up three hits and two walks while striking out six.

Team USA will send Stroman to the mound tonight, while Puerto Rico will counter with Lugo. It was another subtle reminder of the complex loyalties at stake in the tournament.

Bryant McIntosh, who hit the go-ahead free throws in Northwestern's opening-round win, had 20 for the Wildcats and Vic Law had 18. The team created to do everything the opposite of what its opponent wants is in the Sweet 16, where it was penciled in November.

The real Cinderella story of the tournament was Team Israel, who qualified for the tournament through a qualifying tournament held in Brooklyn, New York. So good luck to him against the Puerto Rico lineup - he's going to need it a lot.

Mike Aviles leads Puerto Rico with a.600 batting average, along with three runs batted in and one triple.

Kinsler provided a minor source of controversy himself.

In San Diego, when the US faced Puerto Rico, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic in pool play, Jones said much the same thing. But the truth is the WBC has had a hard time catching on in this country-hurt both because numerous top American players choose not to participate and because it competes every four years with March Madness-and if the event is ever going to capture the hearts, minds and money of the American sports fan, something would have to change.

From the very beginning, it was clear that Stroman was going to pitch the game of his young life.

The World Baseball Classic is staged every four years. All nine of its starters reached base and eight collected at least one hit.

The Americans opened up the scoring in the fourth inning at a soggy Dodger Stadium with Andrew McCutchen driving in Christian Yelich on a run-scoring single.
