Acer's Windows mixed reality headset dev kits shipping this month

Every game developer that attended the event will receive an Acer developer edition headset sometime in the coming months.

Microsoft is about to launch its more powerful version of the Xbox One now designated Project Scorpio, but there are still some mysteries surrounding it including how much it will costs.

The company already announced past year that it partnered with leading device makers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and 3Glasses on a wide range of headsets that pair with Windows Mixed Reality-ready PCs.

ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and 3Glasses are all working on their Windows Mixed Reality devices, so it's definitely a case of watch this space.

At GDC this week, the company revealed that the first mixed reality headset will be shipping to devs later this month.

"(We're) always watching to see what happens", said Spencer on the prospect of a Microsoft supported portable gaming device. The mixed reality technology of Microsoft basically combines the features of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality.

The leader of the team that's in charge of creating Project Scorpio has officially announced that the console will be able to provide owners with 8 teraflops of power, but that's about it. But many upcoming VR headsets might also have those capabilities. That's why Microsoft is calling them mixed reality headsets.

Microsoft will enable Windows 10 users to choose when security updates are installed once they arrive rather than enforcing them straightaway. This means that all the room tracking and motion tracking is done inside the headset.

While overall adoption of Windows 10 slowed down worldwide, Microsoft's latest operating system is losing ground on Steam, where users appear to be moving back to Windows 7.

Microsoft kicked off UUP with Windows 10 Mobile devices in November, and followed up with Insider Preview updates for PCs in December.
