"But Giving Tuesday really lets you look in the community, find something you're passionate about and give back", said Abby Glenn, Development Associate with Habitat for Humanity.

Although the event was initiated in the United States and its date is established according to an American national holiday, Giving Tuesday has become a global event.

"People are looking for meaning", he said.

Anyone can get involved in #GivingTuesday and give back in a way that is meaningful to them.

Down Syndrome of Louisville said Giving Tuesday helps "raise awareness and share with the community the resources and programs we offer to individuals with Down Syndrome of all ages", said Diana Merzweiler, executive director of Down Syndrome of Louisville.

Giving Tuesday is celebrated each year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to kick start the charitable season.

This time of year it's traditions that bring people together.

But it's not just about charitable donations. Giving of your time, talents and skills, making introductions or hosting events for the organization are some other ways to provide valuable support.

Evergreen Charitable Trust is helping the nonprofits who added wishlist items in the Statesman Journal's annual Catalog of Giving for #GivingTuesday.

Since 1999, Engage and Change's Project Winter Survival has distributed over 24,000 winter survival kits for the homeless. "People can be a part of something bigger".

"I heard about it last night and I kind of like it", Taylor said. Their mission is even greater in this season when we give thanks for all we have in our lives. "People can really be confident their money is going to help the need".

After the mad rush for the "best deals" of the year over the weekend, it's time to shell out for charity, despite the fact that the holiday cash burn probably left your finances or wallet in tatters. They're hoping they'll get donations to build and fix homes.They're also looking for volunteers to help build homes, or to provide any other services. "Certain causes may tug at your heartstrings, but once you've identified your passion, doing a little fact-finding is an important first step to ensure you're giving wisely", she notes".

Today is recognized across the nation as Giving Tuesday. Solicitors should identify themselves, and if you ask, tell you what percentage of your donation will go to the charity.
