Hurricane knocks power out at Hilton Head Island

Charleston County officials say that there will be no classes Monday because many students and teachers evacuated inland and will be returning home during the next several days.

Hurricane Matthew's estimated losses are a fraction of those racked up by Superstorm Sandy, which barreled into the Northeast in 2012, and Hurricane Katrina, which swept through Louisiana and nearby states in 2005.

The National Weather Service says tropical storm force winds of more than 40 miles per hour will begin raking the coast Friday afternoon - extending farther into inland areas Friday evening. The Columbia area will not receive near the amount of flooding and damage that those counties along the coastline will receive. "The safety of everyone affected by the storm and the minimization of the impact on emergency personnel were the most important factors considered in making the decision".

But many stayed where they were, and hoped for the best.

But as long as SC remains in the National Hurricane Center's Matthew forecast cone, the governor said she will act with utmost caution to protect people.

This turns into to an us versus them situation, said Barr, who has taught at Presbyterian since 1987. With teams not having matching bye weeks, they will likely go unplayed unless they impact who becomes conference champion or moves into the College Football Playoff.

Vikings stop Newton, snap Panthers' home win streak 22-10
The Panthers' pass protection was solid early in the game, but penalties put the offense in some unfavorable down-and-distances. While Griffen had a monster day Sunday, it seems more and more clear to me the top player on the defense is Smith.

Haley will hold another press conference on Matthew Friday morning.

Hilton Head Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Joheida Fister said all emergency workers plan to leave by noon Friday, before the island starts to experience tropical storm force winds. Savannah police said they also will enforce a dusk-to-dawn curfew.

"We have 2,182 people in shelters, and we have lots of availability still", she said.

Hurricane Matthew could make landfall in SC sometime overnight and cause a storm surge of more than eight feet extending miles inland, according to state officials monitoring the storm. Even though SC has three and Georgia has two SEC losses, both teams can still win the SEC East. Power outages are also expected. "We need you to stay off, because all of that congestion is right now coming through the area and this is when we expect it to bottleneck, so we ask everyone to stay home and stay off the roads".

"There is nothing safe about what will happen", the Governor said.

Hurricane Matthew continues to cause problems for travelers, with 4,500 flights canceled so far between Wednesday and Saturday, according to tracking service FlightAware.
